History

The Department of Hydraulic Engineering and Environments was established forconducting applied, developmental, and fundamental research in the fields of
hydraulic structures, sea and coastal zones, rivers, and pollution control. The development of relevant numerical models, and optimization methods in these
areas are key focuses within the Water Research Institute (WRI). This department has 3 division as below:
• The Division of Hydraulic Structures:
This Group is the pioneer technical group of Hydraulic and Water Environment Research Department. More than 210 applied research
projects have been completed within this Division since the establishment of Water Research Institute. These projects mainly focus on investigating
and optimizing the hydraulic performance of dam-related structures, such as spillways, chutes, energy dissipaters, bottom outlet Conduits, diversion
tunnels, valves and gates, micro-hydropower, and dam water intakes and outlets.
• The Division of River and Coastal Engineering:
This Group emphasizes on river engineering studies, laboratory studies and hydraulic simulation of the performance of river and coast protection
structures, analytical, numerical and laboratory studies of erosion and sedimentation phenomenon in river and coastal regions. This section
carried out many projects on comprehensive studies concerning hydraulic and sediments of dam reservoirs and prepare guidelines for in the river
engineering fields.
• The Division of Environment:
The Division of Field Measuring and Environment focuses on environmental studies related to hydraulic schemes, field studies and
environmental monitoring of physical and chemical quantities of hydraulic bodies with the aim of designing different kinds of structures. Besides, in
this section carried out many projects on the detection of dense flow in dam reservoirs in order to prepare the flashing operation instruction and
evaluate the performance of hydraulic structures based on environmental criteria.
Some projects of this department in recent years are shown in the figure below.
