Introduction

The Division of River and Coastal Engineering with about 40 years of experience, emphasizes on river engineering studies, laboratory studies and
hydraulic simulation of the performance of river and coast protection structures, analytical, numerical and laboratory studies of erosion and sedimentation
phenomenon in river and coastal regions. This section carried out many projects on comprehensive studies concerning hydraulic and sediments of dam reservoirs and
prepare guidelines for in the river engineering fields.

Main vision and mission:
• Providing new methods in the design and construction of river and coastal structures.
• Carrying out research projects on the design and construction of river and shore stabilization structures with utilizing the mathematical and physical models.
• Presenting research projects in the field of sedimentation pattern and descaling methods from reservoirs utilizing mathematical and
physical models.
• Investigation and research in the field of environmental effects of river and coastal rehabilitation plans.

• Presenting research projects in the field of river pollution mitigation.
• River measurement and monitoring network plans.
• Preparation of instructions for operation and maintenance of structures constructed in rivers.
• Study and design of desalination units in order to extract sustainable water.
• Preparation of standards in the field of various river and sea activities.
• Flood documentation and lessons learned
• Support for postgraduate dissertations.
• Holding specialized workshops in the field of water structures in order to increase the technical knowledge of specialists.
The main activities and projects carried out in this group are:
• Supervision of flood control and river training projects: Ghezel-Owzan River is one of the longest (670 km) and largest rivers of the Caspian Sea
basin in Iran. Ghezel-Owzan catchment is also one of the sub-basins of the Caspian Sea basin, and the catchment area is about 50000 square
kilometers. There are more than 42 sensitive zones against erosion have been recognized in the flood control study project. In more than 15 of these
zones river training works have been carried out by supervision of Water Research Institute.
• Physical and numerical modeling: Modeling of Gotvand Dam Reservoir GRP is carried out to obtain the optimal discharge flow with The main goals such as Determination of salt water discharge mechanism from GRP conduit, Selection of optimal flow rate of GRP performance & More efficient management of the reservoir and preventing the increase of
salinity in the reservoir
• Study on development of desalination plants: The mail goal in this study is Investigating the impact of desalination plants on the water quality and
environment of the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. In this study about 205 desalination plants were identified on the southern coasts of the Persian
Gulf and Oman Sea, whose desalination capacity is estimated at 26.3 million cubic meters per day.
